About Project

Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. The data provided by many institutions from around the world is accessible and searchable through a single GBIF portal. The data can be used for taxonomic revisions, environmental niche modelling, and biodiversity assessment.

GBIF has used the Catalogue as a taxanomic backbone on which to make its own additions. It uses associate techniques to link additional species that are not presently in the Catalogue to the positions they are likely to belong.
